Toru Yasui

In 1984, as a TV cameraman of Nihon Denpa News, I was assigned to work in Phnom Penh Cambodia, and began my career as a correspondent.

During that era, Cambodia was in a state of civil war and there was no diplomatic relations with Japan.

Based in Cairo bureau, as a Bureau Chief and TV Cameraman,

I covered Middle East area, Africa and Europe.  I filmed the swaying moments of the 1980s such as the Middle East conflict, Apartheid policy movement and the Revolution of Democratization in Eastern Europe.

After covering the Gulf War in 1991, I joined TV Asahi.  Based in Bangkok Bureau, I continued filming conflicts, wars and disasters around the world.  In particular, Cambodia PKO activities, the situation in Myanmar under military government, and Bosnian conflict.

Since the technological innovation is accelerating, as a video journalist, I feel it is my duty to share my story and experience based on actual events. Also, I would like to re-think about the meaning of Video Journalism in the time where Broadcasting is shifting to Internet communication.
